This Thursday September 27, 2018, Shakeia Kegler, founder of GovLia, walked away with the first place $25,000 prize at the Grace Hopper Celebration PitcHER18 in Houston Texas. The Grace Hopper Celebration is the world’s largest gathering of women technologists, and PitcHER18 is the inaugural pitch competition for the event’s producer. Ms. Kegler completed the Start-Up Now entrepreneurship program in December 2017. Start-Up Now is a Department of Commerce funded partnership between CareerSource Broward and the Innovation Hub at Broward College to teach entrepreneurship and accelerate companies from idea to launch. Ms. Kegler is a Navy veteran turned entrepreneur. After earning her bachelor’s degree in business management and receiving an honorable discharge, she worked as a compliance and contract specialist. Prior to that, Ms. Kegler worked in purchasing, compliance and quality assurance in the Navy. It is from the combination of these experiences that GovLia was born – a cloud-based platform that simplifies state and local procurement processes to increase small business participation.
Mason Jackson, President/CEO of CareerSource Broward, said “We’re so proud of Ms. Kegler! She is one of the 22 companies launched through Start-Up Now and she displays that perseverance and grit typical of both veterans and entrepreneurs.”
Since completing the Start-Up Now program, Ms. Kegler also won the Vetpreneur pitch competition in South Florida and was a fellowship recipient of The Founder Institute.
